Written: July 7, 2016 (Thu) 10:29(My Story) Season 2-(12) Choi Seong-kyu, CEO of ElpowertechI will become a CEO who breaks the existing framework and innovatesSales that were only 50 million won in the first year of establishment have exceeded 20 billion won in 15 years. Exports are also cruising toward 10 million dollars. This is the story of Elpowertech, a transformer manufacturing company that has achieved a 400-fold growth myth.CEO Choi Seong-kyu, who graduated from university with a degree in instrumentation and control engineering, established Elpowertech in July 2000 after learning design and manufacturing at a wire company. The reason he founded a transformer manufacturing company is surprisingly simple. It was because he thought it was cool to do manufacturing without being the end consumer. “It looks cool. I thought there’s nothing I can’t do.” Currently, Elpowertech’s export market is widely spread, but it started in Japan. In 2006, when KEPCO’s transformer purchase volume s..

(Interview) Choi Seong-kyu, Chairman of the Transformer Asso…
Choi Seong-kyu, chairman of the Korea Transformer Business Association, was confirmed for reappointment at the regular general meeting held in February. He has been serving as chairman since the association changed its name in 2013 and will lead the association until 2019. Chairman Choi’s rise as an industry leader dates back eight years. At the end of 2008, Chairman Choi decided that “the Transformer Central Association could no longer afford to have its pride damaged. If someone has to do it, I will do it,” and became the fourth chairman of the Central Transformer Business Association. At that time, there were three business associations in the transformer industry: Central, Western, and Southern. The three associations were created in January 2007 when transformers were converted from a group-based product to a competitive product among small and medium-sized enterprises. In the first year of its establishment, the business association monopolized KEPCO’s unit price volume and was e..

Elpowertech Obtains U.S. UL Certification - Establishing a B…
Elpowertech (CEO Choi Seong-kyu), a transformer exporter, has established a bridgehead for full-scale attack on the North and South American markets. Elpowertech recently announced that it has obtained UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification and CSA (Canadian Standards Association) certification for all types of its main product, the VVVF (Variable Voltage Variable Frequency) special transformer for inverters, over 600V. Elpowertech CEO Choi Seong-kyu said, “We invested 150 million won and worked hard for about a year to obtain the certification,” and “Now that we have received UL certification for our products over 600V and up to 4,500kVA, we will actively develop the North and South American markets.” Elpowertech already has experience exporting to South American regions such as Colombia, but with this certification, it is determined to make a full-scale entry into the advanced markets of the United States and Canada. CEO Choi said, “We are targeting 20-30% annual growth in over..

Elpowertech to build new factory in Hwaseong
Transformer manufacturer Elpowertech (CEO Choi Seong-kyu) is building a new factory in Hwaseong Bio Valley, Gyeonggi Province. Elpowertech CEO Choi Seong-kyu recently met with reporters and said, “We invested about 15 billion won to create a 16,000㎡ site in the Bio Valley Industrial Complex,” and “We plan to start construction around June and complete the new factory with a floor space of 9,000㎡ within the year.” Elpowertech’s new factory is three times the size of its existing Hwaseong factory. The new factory will produce general oil-immersed transformers, dry-type transformers, and transformers for export. In particular, the new factory will mass-produce eco-friendly switchgears, which are currently under development as new items. CEO Choi said, “We are developing a 25.8kV eco-load switchgear to enter the KEPCO switchgear market,” and “We plan to actively target both the domestic and export markets.” Elpowertech has set a goal of growing into a company with sales in the 100 billion ..

(2016 Restarting Company) Elpowertech - Strengthening Portfo…
Elpowertech (CEO Choi Seong-kyu, pictured), a specialized transformer manufacturer, plans to lay the foundation for future growth by strengthening its product portfolio and improving management this year. The ultimate goal is to achieve sales of 100 billion won within 5 years. It is not an impossible story at all. Elpowertech, which celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, has recently shown the fastest growth in the industry despite its short history.Elpowertech, which showed potential by entering the notoriously difficult Japanese market with a large-capacity inverter special transformer (VVVF; Variable Voltage Variable Frequency) in 2006, transformed into an export-oriented company by winning the $5 million export tower award in 2011. With just one transformer, it is leading the way in earning foreign currency in overseas markets such as Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Thanks to these achievements, CEO Choi Seong-kyu was selected as the ‘Innovation Leader Leading Korea’..

(Excellent Procurement) Elpowertech - A 'Great Success' in t…
As competition in the domestic market intensifies, there is a company that is at the forefront of the export fever. Elpowertech (CEO Choi Seong-kyu, pictured) entered the Japanese market one step ahead of global companies such as Hitachi, Mitsubishi, and Siemens, and achieved great success by confidently making a bet with domestic technology. This company has a long history of exporting to Japan. Ten years ago, it focused on the Japanese transformer market, which is famous for its meticulousness, and entered it exclusively, building solid know-how. Highly evaluating the potential of the Japanese transformer market, Elpowertech established its own management strategy and maintained it steadily, and has been firmly establishing itself as a leading export company for several years. The overseas market where Elpowertech’s strength can be seen is, of course, ‘Japan.’ Elpowertech entered the Japanese market with its own strategy and sales know-how without relying on the help of large domesti..

(Interview) Choi Seong-kyu, Chairman of the Korea Transforme…
“I think that improving the profits of our member companies is the way for the business association to gain strength. That’s why we’ve been working diligently for our member companies, such as reducing the joint sales commission for two years in a row and converting profits into equity capital.” The Korea Transformer Business Association decided to lower the joint sales commission by 0.2%p this year, following its previous decision to lower it to 0.9%. However, it added a clause stating that the commission can be raised in the future if the association’s profits worsen. Choi Seong-kyu, chairman of the Korea Transformer Business Association (CEO of Elpowertech), said, “We decided to lower the commission in order to help our member companies with their management difficulties even a little bit,” and added, “We are also planning various programs such as attending overseas exhibitions and visiting the factories of advanced global companies.” “Fortunately, this year, the volume of KEPCO ord..

The job of the association is to create an environment in which this can be realized.” Choi Seong-kyu, chairman of the Korea Transformer Business Association (CEO of Elpowertech, pictured), recently met with reporters and said, “In order for the association to gain power, the best way is to increase the profits of individual member companies.” “Therefore, with the goal of diversifying our business areas through joint production, joint sales, and joint purchasing, we plan to jointly purchase insulating oil and bushings in the near future.” Chairman Choi also suggested strengthening overseas operations as another solution. The main character is Elpowertech (CEO Choi Seong-kyu, pictured), which has exported transformers to India, the US, Colombia, Taiwan, etc. in addition to Japan, and has received the $5 million tower, making competitors envious. CEO Choi Seong-kyu said, “I am proud that I have a better understanding of Japan’s sales, verification, and A/S systems than anyone else, having opened the export route to Japan and traded with it for the past eight years.” He added, “We are not satisfied with this, and are striving to become a ‘Japanese specialized export company’ recognized by others by holding technology exchanges once or twice a month.” He also revealed that while he has focused on the Japanese market so far and is conducting overseas business, he plans to expand his territory to Southeast Asia and the Middle East in the future to dis..

Over the past three years since Kim Ssang-soo took office as president of KEPCO, more than 20 transformer companies have closed their doors. How long should we continue to depend solely on KEPCO? We need to enhance our ability to pioneer civilian and overseas markets as well,” said Choi Seong-gyu, CEO of Elpowertech.Last year alone, Elpowertech exported transformers worth over 6 billion won to Japan, making it the only domestic company to export transformers to Japan, and is on a growth path.
